Academics &
Enrichment
Helping young people succeed in school—while keeping
fit, having fun, and developing new interests—is at
the heart of our year-round Academic Scholars
Program. Both our after-school and summer programs
focus on helping students improve their reading and
math skills. Our summer program is based upon
proven math and reading curricula designed to help
students improve at least one level. During the
school year, tutors provide math and reading support
tailored to each student’s individual needs.
Throughout the year, students also take part in a
variety of educational and enrichment programs to
boost academics, including:
-
Activities
and clubs that include a fashion
design/entrepreneurship program, a competitive
step-dance team, and a book club that brings stories
to life through art and drama;
-
Technology
lab
activities to strengthen computer skills
and provide safe, supervised access to the Internet; -
Special
events
such as an annual living-history
event portraying past and present African Americans,
and Runway Youngins, showcasing students’ own
fashion designs; - Visits
with visionaries
and accomplished role models,
such as Maya Angelou, Dr. Dorothy Height, Dr.
Julianne Malveaux, former Essence Editor
Susan Taylor, Gospel Singer Yolanda Adams, Hilary
Clinton, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton; and tennis luminaries Venus and
Serena Williams, Pam Shriver, Zina Garrison, and
James Blake; and- Field trips
to sites in and around Washington, DC, and
Baltimore, including the Frederick Douglass Museum,
the Kennedy Center, and Port Discovery, special
excursions to New York, where scholars attended the
U.S. Open and a Broadway show, and visits to college
campuses.
In addition, the Center offers fitness training and
tennis classes for players of all levels, from
beginners to those competing in national juniors
tennis tournaments. (During the school year,
students must maintain at least a C average in their
schoolwork to participate in the tennis program.)
